Also known as indirect fillings, inlays and onlays are made from either porcelain or gold are the most long-lasting and esthetically pleasing way to restore your tooth when there is structural damage caused by decay and cracks. Unlike fillings, which are directly molded into place in your mouth, inlays and onlays are created in a dental lab before they are fitted and bonded into place.

About Onlays and Inlays
Crafted from high-quality materials like porcelain or gold, they are designed to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth while providing long-lasting strength and protection.
Unlike traditional fillings, which are applied directly into the cavity and shaped in your mouth, inlays and onlays are custom-made in a dental laboratory. This allows for a precise fit and superior durability. Once created, they are carefully bonded to the damaged area of the tooth, ensuring a secure and comfortable restoration that enhances both the function and appearance of your smile.
Inlays are used to fill cavities within the cusps of your tooth, while onlays cover a larger area, extending over one or more cusps to provide additional reinforcement. Whether you choose porcelain for its natural look or gold for its exceptional strength, inlays and onlays are an ideal choice for maintaining the integrity of your tooth while preserving its esthetics.
With proper care, these restorations can last for many years, offering a reliable and beautiful solution to restore your smile.

Dr. Nevins and his entire clinic team are outstanding. I’m generally terrified of things like this, but they went above and beyond to make both myself and my parents feel comfortable every step of the way.
Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Onlays and Inlays
Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Onlays and Inlays
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN INLAY AND
AN ONLAY?
Inlays fit within the grooves on the cusps of your teeth. Onlays, which are larger than inlays, also fit within those grooves but wrap up and over the cusps to cover more of your tooth’s surface.
WHEN IS AN ONLAY THE BETTER OPTION?
An onlay is the best option when your tooth has extensive damage and the restoration needs to cover an entire chewing surface that includes one or more cusps. The team at Nevins Dental Center will help you determine which restoration is best for you.
