Dr. Nevins will recommend reduction treatment if your pockets have reached a depth that makes it impossible for you and your hygienist to properly clean your teeth. In most cases, the treatment will be completed with a minimally invasive laser therapy known as LANAP™.

About Pocket Depth Reduction

About Pocket Depth Reduction

Pocket Depth Reduction Therapy is a dental treatment used to manage advanced periodontal (gum) disease. In healthy gums, the tissue fits snugly around the teeth, but when gum disease progresses, deep pockets can form between the teeth and gums. These pockets become breeding grounds for harmful bacteria, leading to further infection, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss if left untreated.

The goal of pocket depth reduction therapy is to clean out these deep pockets and reduce their size, allowing the gum tissue to reattach more closely to the teeth. This can be done through a variety of methods, including scaling and root planing (deep cleaning), flap surgery, or laser treatment, depending on the severity of the gum disease. By reducing pocket depth, this therapy helps restore gum health, prevent further damage, and preserve your natural teeth.

With the help of Dr. Nevins’ team and the network of experts he introduced me to, I have been able to get on the right track to restoring (and ultimately saving) multiple teeth that would have otherwise been lost due to decay as a result of previous faulty dental work.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Pocket Depth Reduction

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Pocket Depth Reduction

WHAT IS POCKET DEPTH REDUCTION AND WHY IS IT NECESSARY?

Pocket depth reduction is a periodontal treatment used to manage advanced gum disease. When gum pockets become too deep, bacteria can build up below the gum line where brushing and regular cleanings can’t reach. Reducing pocket depth helps eliminate infection, prevent further bone loss, and protect your natural teeth from future damage.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED POCKET DEPTH REDUCTION TREATMENT?

You may need pocket depth reduction if your dentist or hygienist has measured deep gum pockets during an exam. Symptoms can include bleeding gums, bad breath, gum tenderness, loose teeth, or gum recession. If pockets are too deep to be cleaned properly with routine hygiene visits, treatment is recommended to stop the progression of periodontal disease.

IS LANAP™ LASER THERAPY USED FOR POCKET DEPTH REDUCTION?

Yes. In many cases, pocket depth reduction can be performed using minimally invasive LANAP™ laser therapy. This advanced laser treatment targets infected tissue while preserving healthy gum structure, often resulting in less discomfort, reduced bleeding, and faster healing compared to traditional surgical methods.
